What is Keto?

What is Keto?

Keto = Ketosis is the state in which the body is breaking down fat to be used as energy in place of sugar. While in ketosis your body produces ketone bodies which are produced by the liver from fat to be used as energy.
It was October 6, 2015 and I fortunately had an appointment with Ali Miller – Naturally Nourished. This appointment seriously changed my life! I had been struggling with memory loss, low energy and my weight since having my second little. I tried every diet and I would lose weight, but it seemed my memory and energy just kept declining! That day, Ali advised me that Naturally Nourished offered a class called “Ketosis”.

I read over the details and saw… NO SUGAR and LOW CARB. I wasn’t sure if this was something I could stick to, I LOVED sugar (!!!) but I thought this would be the challenge I needed, and it was only for 6 weeks! Ali promised my memory would improve, my energy levels would increase and I’d lose weight- so I got started just two days later.
The first week was the very difficult; truthfully, one of the hardest weeks of my life! I was totally going through a huge detox and I couldn’t believe the ways it was coming out. I had headaches, I was sweating at night, I was a little dizzy and very irritable. But come day 8, and I was like a new woman! I had so much energy, I felt my brain was back in the game, and I had lost 5lbs!

I was now totally on board and had no desire to cheat! One motivator I learned is that it takes about 3 days to go into ketosis and one meal to kick yourself out. So that being said, I was very diligent and still am! Now, I LOVE how I feel, and, to-date I have lost 18 pounds and 6% of body fat! As the six week mark of my class approached I decided Keto is my life, and I am committed to expanding my knowledge with the help of Ali Miller and my mentor/teacher Carli Vogler RD LD.

Mindful Living

Mindful Living

Girl Time!

I am back from the beach and I had the best time with my sweet friends! For the last three years, we have traditionally gone to NYC in late fall for our girls’ trip but this year we decided to change it up and head south to the Grand Cayman Islands.

I feel rejuvenated, as I sit here and write my memories/reflections in my journal. I feel euphoric reflecting back and happy that I applied skills I learned from my Miraval experience. Let me explain more… I took time on my getaway to breathe in the smells of the ocean air, capture both physical and mental pictures, I laughed and reminisced with my great friends and of course I got to catch up on sleep which just makes everything extra magical when you’re a momma!

Mindfulness is defined as a state of active, open attention on the present. When you’re mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to your experience. Being mindful seems like a simple concept that everyone should just naturally follow but let’s face it, with our busy lives and the distraction of the many devices so many people have in their lives, it is hard to truly live in the moment! I know this first hand! Going off the grid at Miraval last September completely changed my life and I have been so enlightened and inspired to apply the tips I received and eager to learn more about mindful living.

I wanted to share three ways and tips I have incorporated being mindful to my daily life –

Acknowledge || It is so important that you recognize and acknowledge your emotions. We often tell our kids “your fine” or “be happy” and it is so easy to want them to be happy but if we don’t recognize how they are really feeling in the moment and just avoiding those “bad” feelings how do they get past it? I had a one on one consult with a “mindful living” guru at Miraval share- what we should be doing to acknowledge our emotions mindfully. Imagine you are driving along in your car and suddenly you hear something on the radio that immediately makes you feel annoyed. What she recommends is to totally acknowledge your emotion say it in your head or out loud (“I’m feeling annoyed”) and then tell that emotion to get in the back seat so you can keep driving your car forward! It is okay to feel annoyed, mad and sad but it is getting past it and moving on with your life!

Gratitude || The second tip is to truly take time in your day to take a minute especially when you are feeling happy, breathe in the air and take a mental picture of your surroundings including the sky! Something the ‘Mindful Living’ guru from Miraval helped me realize about observing the sky is that it is truly unique and you will never see it again in that same way- regardless if it is overcast or beautiful white fluffy clouds! Since hearing that I do catch myself admiring them and I have the littles’ join in with me and appreciate the small gifts we are given! I recently downloaded an app on my iPhone called “Five Minute Journal” – It is a gratitude journal that you write three things you are grateful for in the morning, then you set a plan with three things you will do to make today great and lastly you put an affirmation to set your day. Then at night you can go back and add the three top amazing things that happened to you that day and add what could have made it even better. I will be honest I don’t remember to do this every day but when I am in a routine of keeping up I feel it sets a happy tone to my day!

Breathing || This is number three on my list to share. I think is so important (beyond the obvious fact that we need it to stay alive) and focusing on my breath has helped me tremendously! While we know how vital breathing is to living, one thing most people don’t take time to do is just simply take deep breaths. When you take three deep breaths (the ones that raise your abdomen) it instantly starts to calm your nervous system and takes you out of ‘fight or flight’ mode which in turn also makes you less reactive to stressful situations. The reason I wanted to share the importance of breathing is in my life with a five and almost three-year-old we encounter almost daily ‘fight or flight’ scenarios and since focusing on using deep breathing in my life I feel like things don’t escalate as much as they used to, which in turn helps me be more mindful and happily present in my littles’ lives!

I hope these tips have helped you and as you can see, being a little bit more mindful can be easily integrated into you day to day so go on and try it and let me know how it goes! Or let me know the mindful living tricks that have worked for you. Thanks for stopping by!

I am thrilled to introduce Sandra Tiffany’s newest contributor, Ali Miller, RD, LD, CDE.
For me, working with Ali has been life-changing and I know that her expertise will have the same effect on you. I met Ali a couple months after I had my second child, Jackson. I was desperate to lose the 45 pounds I’d gained during pregnancy and I loved Ali’s mantra – “Food-as-Medicine.” Although at the time, having a new baby and a toddler around, I wasn’t quite ready to fully commit; but, with Ali’s patience and ongoing teachings, here we are two and a half years later and I’ve lost the baby weight and feel better than ever! I am grateful for having Ali a part of my life and I’m so happy to now share her with y’all! Ali’s website is like a bible of nutritional information; from online courses, to podcasts, to tips and some of the greatest recipes I’ve tasted, you must check her out!

Ali is a Registered Dietitian, Licensed Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator, and a Certified Weight Management Specialist. Her “Food-As-Medicine” philosophy, which is supported by up to date scientific research, is a functional approach to healing the body and preventing disease through the food that we eat. Ali has a passion to create public awareness regarding the significant role that diet plays in our overall health. Through corporate outreach and as a public figure, Ali addresses nutrition misconceptions and myths, clarifying the extensive amount of confusing and conflicting information that often saturates the media.

Ali is the author of “Naturally Nourished: Food-As-Medicine for Optimal Health” cookbook, as well as the “Reset, Restore, Renew: Real Food Detox” program, and the “Optimal Eating” virtual course, and is widely recognized as a leader and advocate in her field. Are You Getting Enough Zzz’s?

Are You Getting Enough Zzz’s?

This past September I had the great pleasure of heading to Arizona for a seven day stay at the fabulous Miraval, a luxurious, all-inclusive resort that provides guests with an opportunity to gain more balance in their life by getting away and resetting!

My days were busy – often starting at 8am and going until 8 pm – full of activities that included outdoor challenges, yoga, meditation, self-help classes and the most spiritually innovative spa I have ever been to! I certainly left with a wealth of knowledge, feeling relaxed and equipped with the tools to live a more mindful/balanced life!

During my stay I was especially drawn to the “Integrative Wellness” lecture series many of which were led by Sheryl Brooks (whom I grew very fond of and chose to participate in several of her programs). The lecture, “Are You Sleeping?” taught me so much and I want to share some of my favorite information I learned about sleep.

Do you know why experts stress the importance of 7-9 hours per night? In a nutshell, it is like putting your body on a charger and getting an “update” each night! When you sleep, you actually go through cycles 4-5 times a night, lasting 90-110 minutes each (this is for the average person who actually sleeps 7-9 hours). During these cycles your body is in restorative mode performing important functions such as hormone regulation (which is HUGE for women and can even be the reason you are struggling to lose weight but doing everything else right!), building your memory bank (everything you learned in the day get ‘deposited’ into your brain each night), and undergoing tissue repair and muscle growth!

Blue light – it sounds pretty but it may also be keeping you up at night! Many of us are guilty of being slaves to technology and the light behind the screens of our phones, tablets and computers are a type of blue light – which are similar to UV lights and are meant to represent daytime –  keeping your brain operating when it should be sleeping! One tip I have taken home with me, is changing the display light to reduce the amount of blue light emitted by your device- the iPhone now has a “Night Shift” feature that is designed to do just that. (On the reverse side – if you need help staying awake during the day, Sheryl suggests putting a natural light bulb above your desk or area you are working)

I’ve also discovered since the latest Apple update that I’m able to be more mindful of my sleep routine using the Clock’s “Bedtime” setting that allows me to set a goal of how long I hope to sleep. This feature analyses each time you wake up and touch your phone and has some great alarm features as well (my favorite is the default).

I’m sure, like me, many of you can’t predict how much sleep you’re going to get every night (especially if you have littles around). But hopefully some of these tips will help you catch some more ZZZs.  For more great tips from Miraval, visit their blog.

In these photos I am wearing House of CB’s Sleep baby pink satin night shirt

I would love to hear any of y’alls tips as well! Please feel free to comment below with what works for you!
