What is Keto?

What is Keto?

Keto = Ketosis is the state in which the body is breaking down fat to be used as energy in place of sugar. While in ketosis your body produces ketone bodies which are produced by the liver from fat to be used as energy.
It was October 6, 2015 and I fortunately had an appointment with Ali Miller – Naturally Nourished. This appointment seriously changed my life! I had been struggling with memory loss, low energy and my weight since having my second little. I tried every diet and I would lose weight, but it seemed my memory and energy just kept declining! That day, Ali advised me that Naturally Nourished offered a class called “Ketosis”.

I read over the details and saw… NO SUGAR and LOW CARB. I wasn’t sure if this was something I could stick to, I LOVED sugar (!!!) but I thought this would be the challenge I needed, and it was only for 6 weeks! Ali promised my memory would improve, my energy levels would increase and I’d lose weight- so I got started just two days later.
The first week was the very difficult; truthfully, one of the hardest weeks of my life! I was totally going through a huge detox and I couldn’t believe the ways it was coming out. I had headaches, I was sweating at night, I was a little dizzy and very irritable. But come day 8, and I was like a new woman! I had so much energy, I felt my brain was back in the game, and I had lost 5lbs!

I was now totally on board and had no desire to cheat! One motivator I learned is that it takes about 3 days to go into ketosis and one meal to kick yourself out. So that being said, I was very diligent and still am! Now, I LOVE how I feel, and, to-date I have lost 18 pounds and 6% of body fat! As the six week mark of my class approached I decided Keto is my life, and I am committed to expanding my knowledge with the help of Ali Miller and my mentor/teacher Carli Vogler RD LD.
Follow Ali on INSTAGRAM and make sure to check out her website ALIMILLERRD.COM for more information.

I am a very passionate person and I have many titles, (Wife. Momma. Sister. Bestie. Blogger. Mane addict. Makeup junkie. Adventurer. Mixologist. Life Apprentice. Spiritual Gangster. Interior Designer. and Health Enthusiast – just to name a few). Some official, and some honorary from my family and friends, but two of which I am very proud of: Wife and Momma. My husband’s name is Lynn and we have been married almost 6 years, our littles are Elynn (pronounced E-Lynn), who is almost five, and Jackson is two and a half. My husband a native from Houston, and I have resided here since 2010 now. Although the summers are still a little unbearable for me, I really love this city and the people I have got to meet here! We love to travel, and now the littles are at such a great age to explore this great earth God has given us! There is definitely never a dull moment around our house and I can tell you: I wouldn’t change a thing! Thank you again for coming to visit, and we certainly have a lot of fun posts in store for y’all!

My Spring Must Haves

My Spring Must Haves

Happy Spring friends! It’s been a while since I have been on here, and truth be told, I’ve missed you all!! As some of you may know, I’ve been doing a TON of Spring cleaning and organizing and have narrowed down some of my favorite products for spring!

  • Oscar de La Renta Sunnies  – I am currently OBSESSED with rose gold and love the fit and the cute details on these!
  • YSL “Mon Paris” Eau de Parfum – I was looking for a sweet scent that reminded me of spring. This is the big winner!
  • Tom Ford Nail Polish “Indian Pink” – I LOVE this for my toes, makes me feel more tanned without it being August.
  • Marc Jacobs “Social Butterfly” Eyeshadow Palette- These pretty, super pigmented shadows double as a perfect subtle liner. My favorite shade? The copper. It makes the green in my eyes pop!
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Nicole Guerriero Glow Kit – I get SO many compliments on this highlighter. My go-to is “Forever Young”, but they’re all so dreamy!
  • Oribe “Silver Pearl” Eau de Parfum – HAIR PERFUME for those days where you skip a wash and need a little refreshing!
  • Tata Harper Purifying Mask  & Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask – Masks have become an integral part of my beauty routine in the past few months. These two masks are honestly AMAZING and make my skin so clear and soft.
  • Marc Jacobs Limited Edition Omega Bronze Coconut Perfect Tan – A great bronzer with an awesome scent! It smells like the beach and the brush is so soft!
  • Honest Beauty Magic Balm – This product is a “jack of all trades”, I love this for my lips, but also use it on the littles especially when we’re up in Canada where they often get dry noses.

Please tell me what your favorites are for this Spring!

Mindful Living

Mindful Living

Girl Time!

I am back from the beach and I had the best time with my sweet friends! For the last three years, we have traditionally gone to NYC in late fall for our girls’ trip but this year we decided to change it up and head south to the Grand Cayman Islands.

I feel rejuvenated, as I sit here and write my memories/reflections in my journal. I feel euphoric reflecting back and happy that I applied skills I learned from my Miraval experience. Let me explain more… I took time on my getaway to breathe in the smells of the ocean air, capture both physical and mental pictures, I laughed and reminisced with my great friends and of course I got to catch up on sleep which just makes everything extra magical when you’re a momma!

Mindfulness is defined as a state of active, open attention on the present. When you’re mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to your experience. Being mindful seems like a simple concept that everyone should just naturally follow but let’s face it, with our busy lives and the distraction of the many devices so many people have in their lives, it is hard to truly live in the moment! I know this first hand! Going off the grid at Miraval last September completely changed my life and I have been so enlightened and inspired to apply the tips I received and eager to learn more about mindful living.

I wanted to share three ways and tips I have incorporated being mindful to my daily life –

Acknowledge || It is so important that you recognize and acknowledge your emotions. We often tell our kids “your fine” or “be happy” and it is so easy to want them to be happy but if we don’t recognize how they are really feeling in the moment and just avoiding those “bad” feelings how do they get past it? I had a one on one consult with a “mindful living” guru at Miraval share- what we should be doing to acknowledge our emotions mindfully. Imagine you are driving along in your car and suddenly you hear something on the radio that immediately makes you feel annoyed. What she recommends is to totally acknowledge your emotion say it in your head or out loud (“I’m feeling annoyed”) and then tell that emotion to get in the back seat so you can keep driving your car forward! It is okay to feel annoyed, mad and sad but it is getting past it and moving on with your life!

Gratitude || The second tip is to truly take time in your day to take a minute especially when you are feeling happy, breathe in the air and take a mental picture of your surroundings including the sky! Something the ‘Mindful Living’ guru from Miraval helped me realize about observing the sky is that it is truly unique and you will never see it again in that same way- regardless if it is overcast or beautiful white fluffy clouds! Since hearing that I do catch myself admiring them and I have the littles’ join in with me and appreciate the small gifts we are given! I recently downloaded an app on my iPhone called “Five Minute Journal” – It is a gratitude journal that you write three things you are grateful for in the morning, then you set a plan with three things you will do to make today great and lastly you put an affirmation to set your day. Then at night you can go back and add the three top amazing things that happened to you that day and add what could have made it even better. I will be honest I don’t remember to do this every day but when I am in a routine of keeping up I feel it sets a happy tone to my day!

Breathing || This is number three on my list to share. I think is so important (beyond the obvious fact that we need it to stay alive) and focusing on my breath has helped me tremendously! While we know how vital breathing is to living, one thing most people don’t take time to do is just simply take deep breaths. When you take three deep breaths (the ones that raise your abdomen) it instantly starts to calm your nervous system and takes you out of ‘fight or flight’ mode which in turn also makes you less reactive to stressful situations. The reason I wanted to share the importance of breathing is in my life with a five and almost three-year-old we encounter almost daily ‘fight or flight’ scenarios and since focusing on using deep breathing in my life I feel like things don’t escalate as much as they used to, which in turn helps me be more mindful and happily present in my littles’ lives!

I hope these tips have helped you and as you can see, being a little bit more mindful can be easily integrated into you day to day so go on and try it and let me know how it goes! Or let me know the mindful living tricks that have worked for you. Thanks for stopping by!

Happy New Year!! Twenty Seventeen

Happy New Year!! Twenty Seventeen

Happy New Year peeps! I am finally back from my holidays and truth be told I have missed it here! I hope y’all had the best holiday season with the people you love the most! This Christmas was one of my very favorites! My littles are now at an age they understand more about the holiday traditions and were so excited to celebrate! I told my bff that being a Momma has totally brought the spirit back from being a kid and is even better now! We spent New Year’s with our Texan best friends up in Canada – we went skiing, tobogganing, skating and enjoyed the Canadian winter which concluded with a fun New Year’s party with Ms. Alana!

I don’t typically set “resolutions” maybe I am odd but the word “resolution” just seems so finite, and  I don’t know about you but the word feels so set in stone and if you don’t follow it to a “T” and then you feel like you have failed yourself. So this year instead of setting a 2017 resolution, I prefer to call it my #twentyseventeenintentions. It clearly means the same thing but using the word “intention” allows me room for growth. So now, I want to share with you and the universe my intentions in all aspects of my life:

Sandra Tiffany:
I would like to have at least 2 posts per week, grow our Pinterest account, and add video to the blog. I would also like to get more involved in the community and meet local creatives who we can grow with together!

Wife:
Since having our littles they have naturally taken center stage in our lives and this year I would like to spend more quality time with my husband trying new activities and strengthening our bond!

Momma:
Since my visit to Miraval in September I took one of their seminars called “Mindful Parenting” – I learned so many fun tools that I am excited to share with y’all but my goal as a Momma this year is to continue to be more mindful and present with my time with Elynn and Jackson. I am already starting to see the benefits of this practice and believe it or not, in taking time to be present it doesn’t feel like time is going quite as fast! I am trying to live in the moment and take all the pure joy into my heart!

Personal:
I have traditionally been a person to work out on the regular but when I started following Keto I decided I would focus more on my diet and learning as much as I could to support a healthy life style change. Fast forward to 2017 my eating habits are at a place that I am very comfortable with but I want to include 3-5 days of fitness classes each week. It has been great getting my weight down but toning/cardio is super important too!

I plan to stay on a low carb life for the year. 2016 was a challenging year for me hormonally and after months of Ali Miller, ND encouraging me to take one of her hormone tests to see just what my levels were at; there were some interesting discoveries. I am now looking forward to sharing what I’ve learned and being a support for other woman who are facing the same challenges/feelings!

I also want to learn how to use my camera in the other modes besides “Auto.” I enjoy photography and it is a skill that gets better with time and practice!

Last but not least for 2017 I intend to be more focused on my spending. I LOVE Amazon Prime and in 2016 I loved it a little too much! We had packages at our door every day! If you watch my Instagram stories you know we have been doing quite a bit of purging and I’ve realized that it’s time to cut back… no one needs to receive packages at the door daily!

I would love to hear any tips y’all have and what your intentions are for this new fabulous year!

Introducing Ali Miller, RD, LD, CDE – Bringing Nutrition and Wellness to ST

I am thrilled to introduce Sandra Tiffany’s newest contributor, Ali Miller, RD, LD, CDE.
For me, working with Ali has been life-changing and I know that her expertise will have the same effect on you. I met Ali a couple months after I had my second child, Jackson. I was desperate to lose the 45 pounds I’d gained during pregnancy and I loved Ali’s mantra – “Food-as-Medicine.” Although at the time, having a new baby and a toddler around, I wasn’t quite ready to fully commit; but, with Ali’s patience and ongoing teachings, here we are two and a half years later and I’ve lost the baby weight and feel better than ever! I am grateful for having Ali a part of my life and I’m so happy to now share her with y’all! Ali’s website is like a bible of nutritional information; from online courses, to podcasts, to tips and some of the greatest recipes I’ve tasted, you must check her out!

Ali is a Registered Dietitian, Licensed Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator, and a Certified Weight Management Specialist. Her “Food-As-Medicine” philosophy, which is supported by up to date scientific research, is a functional approach to healing the body and preventing disease through the food that we eat. Ali has a passion to create public awareness regarding the significant role that diet plays in our overall health. Through corporate outreach and as a public figure, Ali addresses nutrition misconceptions and myths, clarifying the extensive amount of confusing and conflicting information that often saturates the media.

Ali is the author of “Naturally Nourished: Food-As-Medicine for Optimal Health” cookbook, as well as the “Reset, Restore, Renew: Real Food Detox” program, and the “Optimal Eating” virtual course, and is widely recognized as a leader and advocate in her field. Ali has been featured on both ABC and NBC, and appears weekly on Fox 26 in Houston.
In 2015, she received the award of “Top 50 Most Influential Women in Houston” by Houston Woman Magazine.

Happy Thanksgiving Y’all

Happy Thanksgiving Y’all

Can you believe we have officially hit the holiday season?! With only 36 more days in Twenty Sixteen, I am thrilled to spend this special day with my American family!

Growing up a Canadian, we celebrated Thanksgiving the second Monday of October each year. I was always curious as to why the United States celebrated it at a different time, as with most Holidays we celebrate the same time. I learned that Canada’s Thanksgiving is based on an abundant harvest where as the U.S is celebrating the Pilgrims and the New World. The reason Canadians celebrate earlier than the U.S, is because Canada is more North and the harvest season occurs earlier. So, it only makes sense for Canada to celebrate its Fall harvest during their Fall and harvest time!

Every year I am thankful and feel so blessed to have a happy, healthy family who make my heart so full! I have the greatest friends and this year I am also thankful for all of you! I appreciate the support and love and I am excited for another year of growth and sharing my journey!

From my Family to yours I hope you have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

In this post my top is from Joie, my jeans are 7 For All Mankind – Elynn is wearing a dress from Reborn J & Mini Melissa shoes- Jackson is wearing a Gap Kids shirt, Tommy Hilfiger jeans & Sperry shoes
